National Workshops in Bulgaria

On 21st, 22nd and 23rd of May, ARTIED organised its national workshops for introducing seniors and elder adult educators to three of the Catalogue activities and to test them. The presented activities were – “Decoration of old cardboard boxes and postcards using old buttons, ribbons, or seeds”, “Making theatre puppets from wooden spoons” and “Making rag dolls from old clothes”.

The three workshops gathered 23 seniors and elder adult educators in total, all of them living in the small town of Antonovo, Targovishte region. The events provided an excellent opportunity for local people to be active, to explore their creativity and teamwork and to discover new skills and abilities among their friends and neighbours.

In addition to exercising their artistic and craft skills, the participants learned about creative recycling and upcycling and how to turn old household stuff and second-hand items into new, yet colourful gifts for their grandchildren or other family members and friends. They also applied their creativity and manual skills to fold, stick and decorate old cardboard boxes and to make postcards; hand sewing, braiding and drawing skills to make dresses, hair and facial expressions of wooden spoons and to turn them into unique theatre puppets; as well as tailoring and hand sewing skills to make bodies and dresses of fantastic rag rolls.

During and after the events, seniors and elder adult educators were encouraged to share their experience and feedback from the activities and the Catalogue. All participants highlighted the importance of such types of local activities as they allow them to meet with other seniors and to have chat and fun with them. Some of them also shared that it was new to realise how they could use old fabric, yarn or buttons, which everybody has at home, or shells from nuts, such as roasted peanuts or pistachio, for decorating cardboard boxes or for making toys and puppets for their grandchildren.

We would like to specially thank the Antonovo Municipality and the local pensioners’ club and touristic information centre for their support, as well as the members of the Local Promotional Team for their help in co-facilitating the workshops.
